On staying humble

I like quotes, because a great deal of people have been saying or writing memorable things and express my feelings and thoughts a lot better than I could or simply have already done it. I’ll try to blog one of these every month, because there are a lot of them.

In my walks, every man I meet is my superior in some way, and in that I learn from him

Ralph Waldo Emerson

This is a fairly well known, but very important one in my opinion, because it reminds of you staying humble. It reminds me that it is easy to exceed other people in one particular skill and if you choose to measure yourself on what you’re good at, you’re just lying to yourself.

Even though you have studied the same, worked similar jobs or take the same class and exceed in payment or grades or perceived skill from ALL of your common peers, you can learn something from everybody, if you are aware of this.

This approach to me is very similar to just believing in and looking for the best in people and not the worst, not only for their sake, but for yours.

Remember this when you have the temptation to disregard somebody’s opinion or motivation as inferior, because you will never see the whole picture from their perspective, but you can show some interest and learn something that makes you a better, faster, stronger or what you might be going for, person.
